Looking at Cambodia across the Mekong - Don Khone, 4000 Islands, southern Laos.
Southern Laos was really different from the North: completely flat, for instance. By the time I got there, the dry season had been going on for months and everything was bone dry, barren, yellow and brown. Instead of brilliant, dazzling green rice fields, it was all dry stumps. A bit sad, compared to the lush greenery of the north.
Still, the tiny village of Kong Lor with its giant cave and the 4000 Islands near the border with Cambodia made for some perfect relaxing. With temperatures in the high 30’s, there was not much else to do but laze about in a hammock overlooking the river, reading books and sipping fruit shakes and ice coffees. Life was hard …
(This will be my last post about Laos.)
